Reciting the Qur’an whilst lying down

The Prophet (pbuh) used to lie on Aa’ishah’s (ra) lap and recite Qur’an.

[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary:

Imam Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Saheeh Muslim:

“This (the above Hadith) indicates that it is permissible to read Qur’an when reclining and lying down.”

So we benefit from the above Hadith that there is nothing wrong with reading the Qur’an when lying down, whether one is lying on a bed or on the ground. There is nothing wrong with that. A person may recite Qur’an whatever position he is in, standing or sitting or reclining, and whether he has wudoo’ or is in a state of minor impurity, if he is reciting from memory.
