Yes, in fact this whole "Birthday" business in general, seems to come from a Christian idea! So I believe that we Muslims shouldn't be celebrating any Birthdays: especially that of our Beloved Prophet and Messenger Muhammad (S.A.W.)!

Shaykh Saalih al Munajjid said:

During the French occupation of Egypt, Napoleon ordered that people should celebrate the Mawlid, and he donated to this project himself and attended it personally, because it entails opposing Islaamic legislation and included mixing between men and women, and is a form of following desires and committing prohibitions. (Taareekh Al-Jabarti 306/2) He established it on the grounds of corrupting people’s faith, and some of those who celebrate the Mawlid are mercenaries who are there in order to make money out of this celebration, while others are common people who imitate others and seek to fulfill their religious emotions even if it is through an innovation.

Bid'ah In Observing the Prophet’s Birthday

Allāh said:

"Say (O Muhammad), If you should love Allah, then follow me, (so) Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful".

(Aal Imran: 31)

Observing the Birthday as a Holiday is a form of Instituting Innovation

Allah said: "Or have they partners with Allah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not ordained? (Ash-Shura: 21)

Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

"The holidays have already been instituted, so it is obligatory to follow them, not to innovate."

(Iqtidha' as-Sirat al-Mustaqim)

Exaggerating in Praising the Prophet is a Practice of the Kuffaar from the People of the Scripture

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary".

(Agreed upon)

Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

"The Prophet gave sermons, vows, and chronicles on many days, such as the days of Badr, Hunayn, and Khandaq, and the conquest of Makkah, the time of his hijrah, and his entering Madinah. And in many sermons mentioned the rules of the religion.

But this does not mean that these days are to be observed as holidays. The Christians, however, do this, taking the days of the events of 'Issa (peace be upon him) as holidays, as do the Jews." (Iqtidha' as-Sirat al-Mustaqim)

Trying to Get Closer to Allah by What the Prophet and His Sahabah Did Not Do is a Forbidden, Reprehensible Innovation

The Prophet ﷺ said: " The worst things are those which are innovated, and every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance leads to Hellfire".

(Narrated by an-Nasa'i)

Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abdul-Wahhab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "It is a bid'ah to congregate at a specific time for the reading of the seerah of the prophet's birthday and believing that a special sacrifice is required. Such lacks knowledge of the seerah and does not warrant an answer."

It is Necessary to Rebuke the Person who innovates by Observing the Prophet’s Birthday or Participates in It

The Prophet ﷺ said: " Whoever amongst you sees an evil, he must change it with his hand; if he is unable to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is unable to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest form of faith."

(Narrated by Muslim)

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Every misleading innovation in the religion is based on speaking about Allah without knowledge, and for this reason the Salaf and imams intensified the censure. They shouted to those who peacticed it in all corners of earth, and sternly warned them about falling into their fitnah, indeed, their censure for this sin far exceeded their censure for immoralities, injustice and enmity, because the harms of innovation and its ability to harm and corrupt the religion are far greater than those other things."
