In
the middle of the clash between disbelief and Islam, abuses are always
directed to the Messenger of Allah (saws) from some people who do not
have any manners. No doubt those trivial people are less than being a
grain of sand in the shoe of the Prophet (saws). Moreover, these abuses
will not affect his name but they will increase him shining and glory,
and his religion more power and spread. However, we do not accept nor
stand that anyone abuses our Prophet (saws), and we shall not keep
silence about this impoliteness even if souls are sacrificed for that
cause. We shall face and oppose anyone who imagines that he may abuses
the Messenger of Allah (saws), and we shall not find on the surface of
the earth a Muslim who might lag from achieving that purpose no matter
what the price is.
However,
it is incorrect to forget or neglect that our duties toward the
Messenger of Allah (saws) and such abuses and aggressions increase our
love to him and increase our keenness to know these obligations and
fulfill them properly; so what are these duties?
We have many duties toward the Messenger of Allah (saws) which Allah explained in His Book:
The first of these duties is to believe in the Messenger of Allah (saws) until we find the effect of that faith in our hearts such as loving, revering and glorifying him. Allah says: "O you who believe (in Mûsâ (i.e. Jews) and 'Isâ (i.e. Christians))! Fear Allâh, and believe in His Messenger (Muhammad), He will give you a double portion of His Mercy, and He will give you a light by which you shall walk (straight). And He will forgive you. And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." [57:28]
This faith must have an impact of love and glorification in the heart. The Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: "If the origin of faith is to believe by heart, this belief must have an impact on the heart which is the glorification of the Prophet (saws), revering and loving him which is essential.
If this state of love does not exist in the heart, faith is not valid. This lack of effect is done if something lies in the heart to prevent that love such as envying the Prophet (saws), showing haughtiness or negligence to him, and turning the heart away from him; when that happens, belief is invalid." [As-Sarim Al Maslul (1/ 519)]
2- Obeying and following him, resorting to him in arbitration, and submission to his judgment with full contentment. Allah says:

"We
sent no Messenger, but to be obeyed by Allâh's Leave. If they
(hypocrites), when they had been unjust to themselves, had come to you
(Muhammad) and begged Allâh's Forgiveness, and the Messenger had begged
forgiveness for them: indeed, they would have found Allâh All-Forgiving
(One Who forgives and accepts repentance), Most Merciful." [4:64]
"He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad), has indeed obeyed Allâh, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad) as a watcher over them." [4:80]
"And let those who oppose the Messenger's (Muhammad) commandment (i.e. his Sunnah - legal ways- orders, acts of worship, statements, etc.) (among the sects) beware, lest some Fitnah (disbelief, trials, afflictions, earthquakes, killing, overpowered by a tyrant) should befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them." [24:63]
"Say (O Muhammad to mankind): "If you (really) love Allâh then follow me (i.e. accept Islâmic Monotheism, follow the Qur'ân and the Sunnah), Allâh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."" [3:31]

"But
no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O
Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no
resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full
submission." [4:65]
3- To love the Messenger of Allah (saws) more than oneself, children, and all creation as denoted by Allah's Saying: "Say: If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your kindred, the wealth that you have gained, the commerce in which you fear a decline, and the dwellings in which you delight … are dearer to you than Allâh and His Messenger, and striving hard and fighting in His Cause, then wait until Allâh brings about His Decision (torment). And Allâh guides not the people who are Al-Fâsiqûn (the rebellious, disobedient to Allâh)." [9:24]
And authentic and famous Ahadith as was reported in books of authentic Ahadith from the saying of `Umar (ra): "No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than your own self." [Al-Bukhari]
He said: "None of you will have complete faith till he loves me more than his father, his children, and all the people." [Al-Bukhari]
4- Assisting and honoring the Prophet (saws) and treating with all due respect. Honoring and glorifying the Prophet (saws) was the habit of the Pious Predecessors after the death of the Prophet (saws). Mus`ab ibn `Abdullah said: "When Imam Malik mentioned the Prophet (saws), the color of his face changed and his back was bent to the extent that it was difficult for his friends. One day when he was asked about that, he said: If you had seen what I saw, you would not have disapproved that." [Siyar A`lam An-Nubala' (5/ 354-355)] Malik said about Ayyub As-Sikhtiyani: "When the name of the Prophet (saws) was mentioned to him, he wept until I felt pity for him. When I saw his reverence to the Prophet (saws), I wrote about him." [As-Sarim Al Maslul (6/ 17).] There are numerous stories reported from the Pious Predecessors.
5- Not to advance your mere opinion over the Qur'an and the Sunnah, not to raise the voice in his presence, not to call him by name as some people do. Allah says: "O you who believe! Make not (a decision) in advance before Allâh and His Messenger, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. * O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet (peace be upon him), nor speak aloud to him in talk as you speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds should be rendered fruitless while you perceive not." [49:1-2]
6- Not to harm him as some people do with one another even if it is permissible in our religion. Allah says: "And it is not (right) for you that you should annoy Allâh's Messenger, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him (his death). Verily, with Allâh that shall be an enormity." [33:53]
7- Not to prefer ourselves to the Messenger of Allah (saws) and not to lag from helping his religion for which he exerted his entire life. Allah says: "It was not becoming of the people of Al-Madinah and the bedouins of the neighborhood to remain behind Allâh's Messenger (Muhammad when fighting in Allâh's Cause) and (it was not becoming of them) to prefer their own lives to his life." [9:120]
8- Sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet (saws) and asking Allah to grant him Al Wasilah (the most superior degree in Paradise). Allah says: "Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honors, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad), and also His angels (ask Allâh to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As-Salâmu 'Alaikum)." [33:56]. `Abdullah ibn `Umar (ra) that he heard the Messenger (saws) saying: "When you hear the Muezzin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah Al Wasilah for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasilah, he will be assured of my intercession." [Muslim]

9-
Hold firm with his Sunnah and leaving out innovation in religion. It
was reported in the Hadith of Al `Irbad Ibn Sariyah that the Messenger
of Allah (saws) said: "So
hold fast to my Sunnah and the examples of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs
who will come after me. Adhere to them and hold to it fast. Beware of
new things (in Deen) because every Bid`ah is a misguidance." [At-Tirmidhi]
10- Responding to his Shari`ah and its application in all walks of life, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and Struggle in the cause of Allah. Allah says: "O you who believe! Answer Allâh (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life, and know that Allâh comes in between a person and his heart (i.e. He prevents an evil person to decide anything). And verily, to Him you shall (all) be gathered." [8:24]
