2. Today, take a little time to read the Tafseer of Soorah al-Qadr to understand what actually happens this night! You will feel its power & greatness so much more! (Sent an email previously regarding this)
3. Do not just focus on the 27th Night to give it your "all" (Are we sure anyway that it's on 27th? NO!). The entire last 10 days should be your target. Stay up each night! Would you want to miss Laylatul Qadr even "by chance"?
4. Do not fall into any innovations/celebrations any masjid or culture might try to promote. Follow the Sunnah! The Prophet (saws) guided us simply: "Whoever stays up and prays on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”
5. Memorize and keep asking the duaa' taught by Rasoolullah (saws):
Allaahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibb al-'afwa fa'affu 'anni (O Allaah, You are forgiving and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).
6. Prepare a du'aa' list.
Remember this is as awesome as it ever gets for a servant of Allaah! The Night of Qadr, of Destiny! Consciously pick each and everything you crucially wish for in this dunya, in your deen, family, and in your aakhirah! Don't forget to include our oppressed Muslimeen.
7. Take brief naps during the day, if possible. Keep your stomach light and sleep as soon as you have prayed 'Isha. Do not delay! After a brief nap, refresh yourself and get ready for worship.
8. Don't neglect your family!
Rasoolullaah made it a point to wake up his wives throughout these nights! And yes, your children are not too young to stay up some part of the night. Do not allow them to indulge in vain activities such as entertainment. Teach them how this night should be VALUED. This is one of the best things you could do for your children.... Show them the Path to Allah's Pleasure!
9. Set the atmosphere:
The way we dress and prepare has a big effect on our psychology. Wear your best, perfume yourself, and feel the energy! Also tidy up your home and put on some pleasant fragrance.
10. Choose a spot, whether in the Masjid or in your home, where you can have peace and solitude. Keep your Mus-haf, praying mat, and water at hand so that you are not distracted by constantly getting up for this or that.
11. This is not the night to tweet pics or update FB statuses about how amazing the night is and how you are feeling & worshipping Allaah! Let that be a secret between you & your Rabb! Allah is the One Who is going to grant you Forgiveness and Jannah.... Not the people!!
So switch off those phones, WiFi, laptops and computers (unless you're using it as a part of worship). Disconnect with the world, and connect with al-'Afuww!
12. If you find yourself feeling sleepy, vary your acts of worship.
Alternate between Qiyaam, heartfelt du'aa', reading the Qur'aan. Do not spend the night listening to lectures or recitations. Or do it only for a short while when you feel the sleep coming on!
13. Patience is the Key:
The last 10 days might be tiring. You might still have work or school. This is the time to bear all that hardship, and keep firm sabr. Think how Allah has blessed you with this tremendous opportunity that might NEVER come again in your life again.
14. Keep husn adh-dhann bi Allaah (good expectations from Allaah).
When you ask, remember you are asking the Most Generous King. If you hope for the best, He will give you the best. Don't hold back. Trust in Him, pour out your heart in front of Him, and let no doubt, no barrier, no evil thoughts keep you away from ar-Rahmaan, ar-Raheem!"
15. Get your sins wiped out.
Abu Huraira narrated that the Messenger said: Whoever stands (in prayer) in Laylatul Qadr while nourishing his faith with self-evaluation, expecting reward from Allah, will have all of his previous sins forgiven. (Bukhari and Muslim). Don't just pray using the shorter Surahs that you know. Try to make your prayers longer, deeper and meaningful. If you are familiar with longer Surahs, read the translation and explanation and then pray reciting these Surahs, carefully reflecting on the meaning while you pray. Even if you are only familiar with the shorter Surahs, read the translation and explanation beforehand, and then pray reflecting on the message of the Surahs. This is a good way to develop the habit of concentration, even in regular prayers, where many of us tend to be fidgety and/or easily distracted.
16. Evaluate yourself:
Ask yourself those questions that need to be asked. Do an evaluation of where you are and where you are going. Let this evaluation lead you to feel happiness for the good you have done and remorse for the bad you have done. This latter feeling should make it easier to seek Allah's sincere forgiveness when making the Dua.
17. Memorize a different Dua every night.
They don't have to be long. They can be just one line. And be sure to know what they mean generally at least, even if you don't know the exact translation in English. You can put them on index cards (or and keep them with you during the day, glancing at them during work, while driving, waiting in line, etc.) Then practice them at night in prayer.
18. Plan for the next year:
Once you've done a self-evaluation, you can plan on where you want to go, at least in the next 12 months. Laylatul Qadr is a great night to be thinking about this (without taking away from your worship), since you'll Insha Allah, be in a more contemplative state. You may choose to dedicate one night of power for evaluation and one night for planning for the next year.
19. To do list for the Night of Power:
Make a to do checklist for each Night of Power. This should define how you would like your night, the one better than a thousand months, to be used. Pick things from this list and define the sequence you would like to do things in. This will help you avoid wasting your time in unproductive chats which common in the festive atmosphere of Masjids at the Night of Power.
20. 'Ibaadah with Ikhlas.
In the midst of this overwhelming list... Do not forget one thing that we are doing ALL of this ONLY so that > Allah will be pleased with us. So, do everything sincerely seeking His Pleasure. Because, if our deeds are not for Him ALONE then know that it will be REJECTED. So, stop every now and then in midst of your 'ibaadah and ask yourself this > WHY am I doing this? And you should get an answer from with you > To come closer to Allah, to please Him, to earn His Mercy and Forgiveness, to earn His Jannah and to be able to see His Majestic Honorable Face!
