The means of entering Islam are widely known amongst the vast populace, but few are acquainted with the manner in which a person abandons or expelled from Islam. Not learning the acts that cancels Islam will help Shaytaan in achieving his ultimate goal, and that is to make you a disbeliever! There are many means by which a Muslim can be expelled from the camp of Islam; however they have been summarized in to ten. If you are serious about protecting yourself from the evils of apostasy then learn these ten types and stay away from them and those that call to them:
1) Associating partners with Allah in matters of worship, obedience or submission. This act is known as Shirk. Shirk is the greatest crime any person can commit, it is worse than murder. Shirk may manifest in many forms and can happen in belief, statements or actions. It is the crime that will never be forgiven if one dies while committing Shirk.
Allah said, "Verily, Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom He pleases other sins than that." [4: 116]
And, "Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the wrongdoers, there are no helpers." [5: 72]
2) Setting another as an intermediary between you and Allah. This is established by seeking intercession, help, support, reliance upon person on a matter that only Allah can resolve. For example, asking the dead or a alive person to protect you, save you, admit you into paradise etc. Whosoever partakes in this act is an apostate (a person that is expelled from Islam).
3) Considering the Kaffir (disbelievers) and Mushrikeen (polytheist) i.e. Jews, Christians, Hindus etc, to be believers or having doubt regarding their disbelief, or considering their ways/religion to be correct has committed an act of apostasy. Even to consider the religion of the Kuffar to be equal is an act of apostasy, hence calling for interfaith or union of religions is disbelief.
4) To believe that the guidance and judgments by others is better than the guidance and judgment of Muhammad (pbuh) is an action that nullifies Islam. For example preferring the rules and laws of United Nations and/ or British Government than the rules and laws of Islam. Or to think that Democracy is a better alternative that the Shariah of Islam.
5) Disliking anything brought by the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) is an act of apostasy, even if one is practicing the deed. For example, if a person prays fives times a day but hates the prayer in the heart is an apostate. If a person hates any proven statement or action of Muhammad (pbuh) is a renegade from Islam.
6) Ridiculing/mocking or making joke of any issue of Islam constitutes as apostasy. Any person making fun of any aspect of Islam from the rewards and punishment to the obligations and prohibitions is a Murtad (apostate), because Allah said, "Say: Was it Allah, or His signs or His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuse, you have disbelieved after you had believed." [9: 65?66]
7) Practicing magic of any form is a nullifier of Islam. For example; any incantations/spells/charms that make a person like or hate another. The one that performs such acts has committed an action of disbelief.
8) Siding, supporting, assisting and allying with the disbelievers (Jews, Christians, Hindus etc) against a Muslim is an action that expels one out of the camp of Islam. This type of apostasy has become regular in every corner of the world. Many so called ‘Muslims’ police, armies, and governments have sided with the Kuffar against the Muslims.
For example, the current war against Terrorism in reality is a war against Islam and Muslims. Therefore who ever betrays the Muslims has become part of Shaytaan and his allies. And Allah said, "And if any among you takes them [the Jews and Christians] as helpers and protectors, then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are wrongdoing." [5:51]
9) To believe that certain persons are not obliged to adhere to the Shariah brought by the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the way Khidr (AS) was free from the Shariah (law) brought by Musa (AS) is an act of apostasy.
10) Turning away, abandoning, refraining from learning and applying the religion of Allah is a major sin that will make a person a Murtaad. As Allah said, "And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the signs of his Lord, then he turns aside there from? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the sinners." [32:22]
There is no distinction between any of the ten mentioned forms of apostasy, even if any of these acts are done in haste, seriousness, or fear. If committed, the culprit will be outside of the fold of Islam. The only exception is for the person that is forced, and does so with complete hatred for doing the act of apostasy. All these types of evil are from the categories of Kufr Akbar (great level of disbelief) which are the most prevalent in society.
Every Muslim must learn about them, avoid them, and seek refuge in Allah from committing them.
