The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Whoever stands (for prayer at night) during Ramadan, with faith and seeking reward, he will be forgiven for his previous sins.”[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Commentary:
The Prophet (pbuh) informs us in this great Hadith that whosoever establishes the night prayers (also known as Taraweeh prayers) during the blessed month of Ramadan upon true eemaan (faith and belief) whilst hoping, seeking and anticipating a reward from Allah will have his previous sins forgiven.
The night prayers are most commonly performed by praying 11 rak’at (units) of prayer which includes the 3 rak’at (units) for the Witr prayer, the rak’at are performed 2 rak’at at a time then concluding with 1 rak’a which is part of the Witr prayer.
The night prayers are from the most virtuous actions a person may perform during the blessed month of Ramadan therefore no one should keep away from performing these prayers lest he misses out on the great reward for it and thus becoming from those who are truly deprived.
And Allah knows best!
