A’isha (ra) reported that she asked Allah’s Messenger (pbuh), “O Messenger of Allah! If I knew which night is Laylat ul-Qadr, what should I say during it?” And he instructed her to say: “Allahumma innaka `afuwwun tuhhibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee – O Allah! You are forgiving, and you love forgiveness. So forgive me.”

Commentary:
We benefit from the above report that it is recommended to make extensive supplication during the nights which Laylat ul-Qadr may be especially with the above supplication which the Prophet (pbuh) taught A’isha (ra) to say.
The supplication is, “Allahumma innaka `afuwwun tuhhibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee (O Allah! You are forgiving, and you love forgiveness. So forgive me.”)
In this supplication, the servant is asking and calling on Allah by firstly saying “O Allah!”, then secondly by stating that Allah is forgiving and loves forgiving by saying “You are forgiving and you love forgiveness” (i.e He loves forgiving His servants) and finally by saying “So forgive me”, here the servant is asking Allah, the All-Knowing to forgive him of his sins.
We also see from the above report the eagerness of A’isha (ra) to learn that which will benefit her.
We ask Allah to forgive us and guide us to that which pleases Him most.
And Allah knows best!
