Multiplication of Rewards & it's Causes...

Sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di mentioned the following benefit in his book of thematic tafsir:

A point of benefit: In the Qur’an, there are many Ayaat which mention the multiplication of good deeds by ten, and there are also other Ayaat which mention the multiplication by more than that, so what is the explanation of that?

One can respond: As for the multiplication of good deeds by ten, then this must happen for every righteous good deed, just as Allah said:
Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [6:160]

But as for the multiplication of deeds by more than that, then there are certain causes for that – either something related to the doer himself, or related to the deed being done and its merit, or the outcome of the deeds and its fruits, or to its time or place.

So one of the greatest causes of the multiplication of deeds is when the slave actualizes both al-ikhlaas (sincerity) to the Object of worship as well as following the example of the Messenger. So the multiplication of deeds follows from and corresponds to the strength of his ikhlaas and the strength of his imaan that is enacted in the heart of doer.

And likewise, one of the causes for the multiplication of deeds is that the deeds arise from a sound salafi ‘aqeedah purely derived from the Book and the Sunnah. So this slave experiences ease in terms of his deeds being abundantly blessed much more than the deeds of those who are not like this.

And another cause for the multiplication of deeds is leaving off the immorality that the lower-self desires despite the strong temptation to engage in it. This is a proof of his imaan and tawakkul and ikhlaas.

Another of the causes of the multiplication of deeds is that the deed being done contains some benefit and enrichment to the Muslims, such as the likes of jihaad in the path of Allah – and jihaad is both by means of evidences and proofs, and by means of the sword and spears. This is as Allah said in regards to the spending of the people of this category:
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing [2:261]

This includes traversing the path of teaching and learning the sciences of the Shari’ah and whatever aids one in that. And in the hadeeth, “Whoever takes a path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make the path of al-Jannah easy for him.”

Another cause for the multiplication of deeds is acting and hasting to the paths of goodness from which the Muslims will experience benefit in terms of both their religious and worldly matters and which will bring about their benefit. An example of this is a deed which a slave does and then many others take part in it with him and follow in his example.

Another instance of this is if the deed has a great effect and large benefit, such as helping distressed one and alleviating the anguishes of the distraught ones. And how often is it the case that through some deed from this class of deeds Allah would thereby eliminate all of the sins of a slave and direct him unto His pleasure. And the story of the prostitute who gave water to the dog who was about to die from severe thirst is a supporting evidence to that.

Another cause for the multiplication of deeds is the elevated station of the doer in the sight of Allah and the loftiness of his rank, as Allah said:
O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women, if you fear Allah [33:32]

And His statement before that:
And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allah and His Messenger and does righteousness – We will give her her reward twice; and We have prepared for her a noble provision. [33:31]

Another cause for the multiplication of deeds is giving charity from good earnings and the strength of one’s ikhlaas.

Another cause of the multiplication of deeds is that a deed takes place at a virtuous time or a virtuous place.

And one of the greatest of things through which deeds are multiplied is actualizing the station of al-ihsaan in carrying out the servitude of Allah. It comes in a hadeeth, “There is nothing for you of your Salaah except that during which you are focused”. So as for the Salaah, recitation of the Qur’an, dhikr and other acts of worship – if they are done with a strong presence of heart and complete imaan, then there is no doubt that there are so many levels between that on the one hand and the worship of the inattentive one on the other hand such that one cannot even see the distance between these two without straining his neck.

And the causes of the multiplication of rewards are many, however we have only informed you of their basics.

And one of the things which is practically unanimous among all the guiding scholars is that there is no deed which can compare to the condition of being characterized at all times with strong ikhlaas towards Allah, sincerity towards Allah’s slaves, loving good for the Muslims, as well as frequently making dhikr of Allah. The people who have these characteristics are the foremost in terms of every virtue, and in terms of recompense and reward, and the rest of their deeds follow from this characteristics. So the people of al-ikhlaas and al-ihsaan and al-dhikr are the foremost of the forerunners, and they are the ones who are near to Allah in the Gardens of Pleasures.
