Shaytan is the biggest mutakabbir. Because Allah said: “And when We said unto the angels: Prostrate yourselves before Adam, they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. He demurred through Takabbur, and so became a disbeliever.” [2: 34]

At Takabbur is rejection of the Haqq, and neglecting it/throwing it away …

-          To look down to the people

-          Belittling them

The Shari’ah does not differ in its meaning of At Takabbur with the linguistic meaning.

Abdullah Ibn Mas’oud narrated
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “He will never enter paradise, the one who has one atom of Takabbur.” [Hadith Saheeh Muslim]

On this hadith, a man asked the prophet (pbuh) asked: “O rasulullah, if a man likes to have good clothes and good shoes, is this arrogance?” the prophet (pbuh) said: “Allah is Jameel, (he is good and likes everyone to be Jamal (good)) and likes to see everything Jamal (good), Arrogance is Batrul Haq (to reject the truth) and look down at the people (and belittling them).”

HAQQ
-          Haqq is knowing the difference between halal and haram

-          It is the rights

-          It is the Truth

When you have At Takabbur is like not caring, If Allah were to always speak to us directly, we would be Terrified. However today we don’t treat the Qur’an as if it is his word addressing us. But we must begin do so, because we must worship Allah as if we see him, and if we do not see him, he sees us.

AT TAKABBUR:
At Takabbur is divided into two divisions

-          One takes you out of the fold of Islam,

-          And the other makes you commit sin.

1-     KIBRU AL KUFR:
This is Kufr Akbar, and takes you out of the fold of Islam.
Allah said:
“Verily (but No) my verses reach you, and you rejected it and were arrogant and were amongst the Kafireen.” [39:59]

“Whenever a messenger came to you (with something) you didn’t like, you became arrogant, Some of them you rejected and some of them you killed. [2: 87]

“Then, as for those who believed and did good deeds, unto them will He pay their wages in full, adding unto them of His bounty; and as for those who were scornful and arrogant, them will He punish with a painful doom.” [4: 173]

“They said: Shall we put faith in thee, when the lowest (of the people) follow thee? He said: "And what do I know as to what they do?”Their account is only with my Lord if ye could (but) understand. "I am not one to drive away those who believe. [26: 111-114]

“And remember when we said to the angels, “prostate yourself in front of Adam” and they all did except Iblees, he rejected and was arrogant and became one of the kafireen.” [2: 34]

-          Iblees is the biggest Mutakabbir

“And Fir’awn and his soldiers became arrogant and rejected the Haq, and they thought they would not have to return to us.” [28: 39]

-          And all other pharaohs

“And Fir’awn called all his people, (and said) ‘am I the one who has authority over Egypt? and these rivers that flow below me? Am I not better than the one who has been humiliated and is hidden? [some say he meant Musa (as) and some say he meant Allah (swt)] why then are not golden bracelets bestowed upon, and with angels alongside him?’ [this suggests that he meant Musa (as) because he always came decorated] he fooled and misled his people, and they followed him, verily they were people who are Fasiqun.” [43: 54]

“And your lord said, Ask me, I will respond to your invocation. But those who are too arrogant to serve Me will surely find themselves in Hell in humiliation!" [40: 60]

2-     KIBRU AL MA’AASIE
This makes a person sinful.

This is to do with the affairs of the dunya.

Salman al Aqwa narrated,
“A man entered on the prophet (pbuh) while he was eating, and he sat down to eat. He started eating with his left hand, the prophet (saw) said “Eat with your right hand, “the man said: “I cannot.” The prophet (saw) said: “Nothing stops him except Arrogance” after that the man never lifted his left hand to his face after that (some people say that after that, his hand became paralysed).” [Bukhari and Muslim]

The prophet (pbuh) said: “in the salat muslim to another muslim is like one line, foot to foot, and shoulder to shoulder.”

-          It is a sign of Arrogance when you do not want to stand close in the rows of salah.

-          It is arrogance to reject advice.

-          To reject ‘Ilm from the ‘Ulemah and older and wiser people

What are the consequences of At Takabbur?

1-     In the Dunya

-          AL SADD ANN DEENILLAH - It will become an obstacle for you to learn the Deen.

-          You will never follow the Haq

-          You will never listen

-          It will put you on the Misguidance

Allah said:
“And whosoever turns away from my reminder, will have a difficult life (in haram and misguidance) and we shall raise him blind on the day of resurrection.” They will say ‘why have you raised us blind when we used to see in the dunya?’ he will say, ‘our verses reached you in the dunya, but you disregarded them, and in a like way you will be disregarded on this day.’” [20: 124 - 126]

- The Deen (Ayat and Ahadith) will have no effect on the Arrogant.

Allah said:
“I am going to turn their heart from my verses, those who have arrogance in the Earth, without to write and Even if he sees every verse, he will not believe in it, and if he sees the right path, he will never take it, but if he sees the way of misguidance, they will take it, that is because they rejected our signs and failed to take warning from them.” [7: 146]

2-     In the Hereafter
The one who is arrogant in the dunya will have permanent residency and citizenship in Hellfire.

Allah said:
“Enter Hellfire from all the doors, forever. That is the permanent state for the arrogant.” [16: 29]

“And on the day of resurrection, you find those who lie and did not take Allah’s Deen, there faces are so ugly, Isn’t Jahannam the permanent residence for the Arrogant?” [39: 60]

“And your lord said, Ask me, I will respond to your invocation. But those who are too arrogant to serve Me will surely find themselves in Hell in humiliation!" [40: 60]

“And now you will be humiliated and go to hellfire, because you used to be arrogant …” [18: 20]

The prophet (pbuh) said:
“Do you want me to tell you about the people of hellfire? The one who is Harsh, the one who collects dunya (his blood is thick)and arrogant.” Abu Huraira

The prophet (pbuh) said: (there became a competing between hell and Jannah) Jahannam said: “I have all the arrogant and hard people …” Jannah said “I have all the ones who are weak, gentle …” Allah arbitrated between them, and said: “you Jannah have my mercy and Jahannam you have my mercy … I have pledged to fill both of you.” (i.e. they are equal.) [Muslim]

The prophet (pbuh) said: “A person will continue to be arrogant, and he will be recorded as the jabbareen (the ones who Allah will destroy) …”

The prophet (pbuh) said: “A (wealthy and arrogant) fat man will come on the day of Judgement weighing less than a mosquito wing.”
