STOP THE EXTRADITION !!!

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuh,

Our dear Muslim brothers and sisters and to all the non-Muslims with a conscience we would like to address you on the decision of the European Court in Strasbourg on Monday 24th September 2012 to extradite five Muslims to the United States. This is a matter that must touch the heart and mind of everyone. In a world of increasing conflict and discrimination, of deceit and exploitation, of injustice and oppression where governments instigate wars for their own selfish interests and where the life of human beings has become no more than an expendable cost we are today once again faced with a crisis which we cannot ignore and which demands not only our attention but our immediate action.

Those who may have turned a blind eye to Guantanamo bay and Abu Ghraib hoping that they would just go away or who stood by stunned whilst Muslims were slaughtered, their honour violated and land occupied around the world and who have ignored the calamity of those handed over to brutal regimes for torture, must now raise their voices when five Muslims are due to be extradited by the British Government to one of the most openly harsh regimes in the world today. A regime that makes no qualms about its anti-Islam and anti-Muslim agenda, who already engage in torture against Muslims and who believe in trading the right not to be tortured for the sake of their own perceived national security.

The imminent extradition of brother Babar Ahmad, Sheikh Abu Hamza and another three Muslims, namely Khaled Al-Fawwaz, Adel Abdul Bary and Syed Talha Ahsan, by the British government to the United States was a pivotal decision since not only does it set a precedence for other such cases but also passes the message that in the eyes of the European Courts and Governments the American regime are to be trusted with the justice and well-being of our fellow Muslims. Whatever views one may have about the activities of these or other Muslims let us understand that it is the American regime which have already held hundreds of Muslims without any evidence for over a decade in Guantanamo bay, who already admit engaging in torture techniques such as water-boarding to extract information from Muslim detainees and who allow adverts calling Muslims savages if they stand against Israel.

For those who may think that the case of the current five will somehow be treated differently let us recall how sister Aaafia Siddiqui was not only beaten and dishonoured whilst in US custody but since 2010 stands convicted of attacking US soldiers and is serving a life sentence in a US prison. What about brother Fahad Hashmi, who in 2010, on the basis of a self-confession from a super-grass seeking to diminish his own sentence, is today serving a 15 year sentence in the US for the ‘crime’ of innocently allowing this person to stay in his flat for two weeks.

In Islam, as well as under human rights law, every person must be treated as innocent until proven guilty based on evidence of crimes being committed. In the case of these five Muslims, let us remember that this extradition is not due to sufficient evidence of crimes having been committed, since any actual evidence has not been disclosed by the US authorities, but rather they are being extradited on the basis that these Muslims will not suffer discrimination or torture at the hands of the American regime.

Let us remember too that neither Babar Ahmad nor Syed Talha Ahsan have been accused of any crimes in the UK and even those who have, such as Sheikh Abu Hamza, have completed their sentences and are merely being held at the request of the US regime. Khalid Al-Fawwaz has been held in prison in Britain for 14 years at the behest of the US, the longest time a person has ever been detained without any charges in the UK, an equivalent of 28 years had he indeed been convicted
and served half his sentence! Despite widespread support from the Muslim community and the British public to stop the extradition of Babar Ahmed the UK government is adamant that these Muslims must be handed over to the US regime. The current decision will also give the green light for further extraditions of even non-Muslims such as Gary McKinnon or Richard O'Dwyer. In the so-called war against terror, which most people in the world today perceive as a war against Islam and Muslims, the British regime stand side by side with the Americans not just in their rotten foreign policy of occupation and murder in such places as Iraq and Afghanistan but also in their eagerness to please their allies even in torture through rendition, extradition and compliance no matter what the gravity of the injustices and oppression that are committed.

As various individuals, groups, organisations and bodies representing a wide cross-section of the Muslim community in the UK we out-rightly condemn the decision of the European Court and we urge all Muslims and even non-Muslims to demand that the British government not only stop the extradition of any Muslim to the US but also demand that these Muslims be released to live freely with their families secure in the knowledge that they will not be subject to extradition, further illegal incarceration or face the prospect of torture, injustice and discrimination at the hands of the brutal US regime.
