Assalamualaikum wa Rehmatullah, we have noticed not many of our beloved Muslim Brothers and Sisters are aware of the Biddah of raising hands for dua' during a Friday Khutbah, so Insha'Allah this post will assist with the necessary Hujjah required to stop this Biddah and as well forward it on to those who need these Proofs Insha'Allah:
Also Islamqa inquiry for those who strictly follow or require Saudi Ulema response on the matter:
It is not prescribed for the Imam or the worshippers to raise their hands during the Friday Khutbah, because the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) did not do so, and neither did his righteous successors, As for those who use the Hadith of Sahih Bukhari that the Prophet (pbuh) raised His hands during the khutbah, then all Muhadditheen agree that this was for the purpose of Istisqa (seeking rain), for which it is permissible to raise the hands.
Imam Muslim رحمه الله narrates from ‘Ummarah Ibn Ru’aybah (ra):
عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ رُؤَيْبَةَ قَالَ رَأَى بِشْرَ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ رَافِعًا يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ قَبَّحَ اللَّهُ هَاتَيْنِ الْيَدَيْنِ، لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا يَزِيدُ عَلَى أَنْ يَقُولَ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا وَأَشَارَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ الْمُسَبِّحَةِ“Ummarah Ibn Ru’aybah saw Bishr Ibn Marwan on the Mimbar raising his hands. He said: ‘May Allah disfigure these hands. Verily, I saw the Prophet (pbuh) (deliver the khutbah) and He would never raise His hands except the index finger”
(Sahih Muslim)
Imam Nawawi رحمه الله writes in his commentary of Sahih Muslim:
هذا فيه ان السنة ان لا يرفع اليد في الخطبة
“This Hadith is proof that the Sunnah is not to raise the hands during the khutbah”
(Sahih Muslim ma’a Sharhin Nawawi: 3:201, Maktaba al-Bushra)
Imam Shawkani رحمه الله commentates on the aforementioned Hadith:
والحديث يدل على كراهة رفع الأيدي على المنبر حال الدعاء وأنه بدعة
“The Hadith proves that it is disliked to raise the hands on the Minbar during du’a, and that it is a Bid’ah.”
(Nayl al-Awtar: 3:308)
All four Madh’habs have deemed the raising of the hands during the Friday khutbah as an act which is contrary to the Sunnah.
The Hanafi view:
“And when (the) Imam begins to make du’a, it is not permissible for the people to raise their hands.”
(Radd al-Muhtar ala Durr al-Mukhtar)
The Maliki view:
“The Sunnah is to not raise the hands in the khutbah, this is the opinion of Imam Malik”
(Sharh an-Nawawi: 3:201, Maktaba al-Bushra)
The Shafi’i view:
وَيُكْرَهُ لِلْخَطِيبِ رَفْعُ يَدَيْهِ حَالَ الْخُطْبَةِ قَالَهُ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ لِحَدِيثٍ فِيهِ فِي مُسْلِمٍ
“And it is disliked for the khateeb (the one delivering the sermon) to raise his hands during the khutbah, Imam Bayhaqi took this view due to the Hadith of Sahih Muslim.”
(Nihayatul Muhtaj: page 506)
The Hanbali view:
“And from the disliked (acts of the khutbah) is to raise the hands during the du’a in the khutbah”
(al-Fiqh ala Madhahib-il-Arba’ah: 1:309, Dar al-Hadith al-Qahirah)
Those who don’t follow any Madh’hab, like Shaykh Abdul Azeez Ibn Baaz رحمه الله also termed it an innovation and against the Sunnah:
لا يُشرع رفع اليدين في خطبة الجمعة لا للإمام ولا للمأمومين؛ لأن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم لم يفعل ذلك ولا خلفاؤه الراشدون
“It is not prescribed for the Imam nor the followers to raise the hands during the Khutbah of Jumuah as The Prophet (pbuh) did not do so, neither did His rightly guided successors.”
(Fatawa Islamiyyah: 1:427)
