By Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (HafidhUllah)

“Fasting the month of Ramadan brings the reward of ten like it, and fasting the six days brings the reward of two months, and that is the fasting of the whole year." Ibn Khuzaymah

30 Days of Ramadan X 10 = 300 days

6 Days of Shawwal X 10 = 60 days

Grand total ..................360 days

-(Six days), are the six days within the Islamic month after Ramadan (Shawaal) 29 or 30 days after Ramadan ends.

-Fasting can start on the 2nd day of Eid.
It is prohibited to fast the day of eidul-fitr, but permissible to fast the day after it which is the 2nd day of Shawwal.

-Fasting the six days does not have to be consecutive.
Fasting them separately is sufficient.

-If one missed days from Ramadan for an excused reason such as travel, illness or menstrual cycle, must they complete those days before they begin the 6 of Shawal?

The four imams and contemporary Ulama disputed this issue; lets keep it basic: The reason for the dispute is the hadith:
"Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days from Shawwal it is as if they fasted the entire year.” [Muslim]

Some said (fasts Ramadan) means the entire month and one who missed days of Ramadan has not fasted all of Ramadan.

Others said one who misses days of Ramadan for an excuse falls under the general terms of one who (fasted Ramadan); add to that the fact that the days one missed are not obligatory to be completed until right before the following Ramadan starts. So one can do the six days and then throughout the year make up for what is missed of Ramadan.

al-Bujaireemy in (Tuhfat Al-Habeeb) 2/352 and Ibn Muflih in his famous book (alMubdi') 3/52 gave more reasons on why it's permissible to fast the six days even if one did not complete the missed days of Ramadan.

(Conclusion) One should try to make-up missed days of Ramadan before starting the 6 days of Shawwal to avoid this dispute.

However, if one is unable or finds it's difficult, or chooses not to make the missed days first, then (it's difficult) to say they will not get the full reward for fasting the six days before completing the missed days of Ramadan due to the close dispute on this matter.

-A sign of a good deed (Ramadan) being accepted is following it with good deeds and being better after Ramadan, than you were before and this is one of the benefits of the 6 of Shawwal.

-As always:
Share and encourage others to fast and you will get the reward of their fast on top f yours:
" Whoever directs someone to a good, then he will have the reward equal to the doer of the action." [Muslim (1893)]
