The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The Great and the Glorious Lord said (to angels): Whenever My bondsman intends to commit an evil, do not record it against him, but if he actually commits it, then write it as one evil. And when he intends to do good but does not do it, then take it down as one act of goodness, but if he does it, then write down ten deeds (in this record) . [Muslim, nos.49, 50 & Bukhari, vol.8, no.498; vol.9, no.592]
The angels says, ‘O Lord, Your slave wants to do something bad,’ although He (Allah) Knows best about him. So, Allah says, ‘Watch him. If he does it then write it down as it is. If he does not do it, then write it down as one hasanah for him, for he is abstaining from it because of Me.’
[Saheeh Muslim (1/117, hadeeth no. 129)]
Here Allah is speaking to his angels telling them to write down whatever a person says or do even though HE meaning ALLAH knows what they intend.
Allah has given us time to repent before the honourable scribes (kiraman katibeen – recording angels) record our deeds.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The (scribe) on the left hand raises his pen (i.e., delays writing) for six hours [this may refer to six hours of 60 minutes as measured by astronomers, or it may refer to short periods of time during the day or night – Lisaan al-‘Arab] before he records the sinful deed of a Muslim.
If he regrets it and seeks Allah’s forgiveness, the deed is not recorded, otherwise it is recorded as one deed.” (Reported by al-Tabarani in al-Kabeer and al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan (The Branches of Faith); classed as hasan by al-Albani in Silsilat al-Ahadeeth al-Saheehah, 1209). A further respite is granted after the deed has been recorded, up until the moment before death approaches.
About the Qur’anic verse that reads: Lo! There are above you guardians, Generous and recording, who know (all) that you do. (Al-‘Infitar: 10-12) Al-Qurtubi explained it saying: “Angels are able to know man s deeds.” As well as this, it is said: “Angels not only know what a person does, but what he intends to do.”
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sufyan was asked: How do Angels know if a person has a bad or a good intention? He replied: When a person intends to do a good deed, Angels perceive the smell musk coming out of him, whereas if his intention is evil, they smell a bad odor.”[meaning the angels, who smell a good smell when a person is thinking of a good deed, as was narrated from Sufyaan ibn ‘Uyaynah]
Ibn Hajar commented on the above mentioned Hadith saying: It proves that Angels are able to know human intentions either as revealed by Allah or by having special knowledge which He granted them. The first view is supported by that which is narrated from Abu `Imran al-Juni that: An Angel is ordered to record so and so. The Angel says there is no deed to record, so Allah will tell him that he intended to do it. It is also argued that the Angel is able to smell the bad smell of evil deeds and the good smell of good deeds.
